Lots of Changes Coming

...including a NEWSLETTER!

So let's start there.  Sign up for the Krissi's Art Studio/Skelekitty & Friends newsletter and you won't miss out on any sales, giveaways, events or announcements.

What kind of announcements, you ask?  Well, for example

  • I have decided to reopen my Etsy shop (krissi.etsy.com) with a limited inventory.  For right now, it just has select ready-to-ship art jewelry and the new Lotería greeting cards.
  • I will continue to keep my ArtFire shop (skelekitty.artfire.com) open, but will be phasing it out as my "primary" online shopping presence because of some recent service problems.
  • In the meantime, the URL skelekitty.com will take you to my main shop, wherever it is hosted.

I have also greed to start selling certain items in two local Sacramento shops.  I don't usually sell through retail stores, but these two businesses are so awesome, I didn't DARE say no!  Since that's still in the works, I'll be saving that for the newsletter!

There are some great contests coming up, as well as some new tutorials and a few pretty spectacular collaborations that you won't want to miss out on.

I hope your Halloween was spectacular and that you will enjoy your Day of the Dead and remember friends and family past.

Much love,  Krissi & Skelekitty

p.s.  With the holiday gift giving season approaching, please remember, you don't have to buy from me, but when you give...

Spirits' Journey & Soul Searching
16x12" mixed media on canvas panels
Howdy everyone!

I realize I've been noticeably missing in action here on 'teh interwebz' for the last few months as I prepared for my very first solo show.  My nose-to-the-grindstone attitude has definitely paid off, as I was able to build a collection of  both new and "classic" Day of the Dead themed paintings and gift items for everyone.

I am thrilled to be showing at Little Relics Gallery & Boutique, located in the heart of Midtown Sacramento, and to be working again with that gallery's owner, a talented jeweler and artist in her own right, Susan Rabinovitz.

FAQ: Can I Use That Image? (aka Copyright 101)

Intellectual property (patents, licenses, copyrights) is a pretty tough concept to get your mind around, but you are in luck.  As it happens, before I was a full time artist, I used to negotiate licensing agreements.  True story.  And since I received two almost identical inquiries involving this very subject in the last few months, I figured it warranted its own post.

In both cases, the requests boiled down to this:

they wanted to commission a piece of art from me and then sell reproductions of the image (one on jewelry, one as prints).

My short answer was "no" to both because, whether or not they purchase a physical painting from me, the image still belongs to me.  That's where the "intellectual" part of intellectual property comes in - the idea (and execution of that idea) is my property.  Yep.  No matter what they pay for the paintings themselves, such payment does not include the right to use the images.

Still a little confused?  No problem.

Think of it this way:  Let's say you go to Borders or your local book store (they still have those, right?) and you buy a copy of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows.  You own that physical book, that thing with pages (the "tangible property") - you paid for it.  You may put it on the shelf or dog-ear the corners, sell it in a garage sale or even, God forbid, burn it if you want to.  However, you don't own the rights to the IDEAS contained therein.  You may not make copies of the book and sell them.  You may not make a movie of the book.... unless of course you have permission from Ms. Rowling (customarily in the form of a license agreement and huge-ass amounts of cash going from you to her).

Art works very much in the same way.  Let's say you pay me for a custom painting of your cat.  No matter how much I charge you for that painting - you are only paying for my time, supplies and creativity, not for the rights to use the image.  So even if I charge you an exorbitant amount, you still may not make copies, prints, Christmas cards (not even for your own use) unless we have a written agreement where I specifically give you those rights (which would be under a License Agreement).  Yeah, I know, even though it's YOUR cat.  Even if I painted from a photo you took.

2011 ADDENDUM:  The reverse/reciprocal is also true: I have the right to do whatever I want with the image.  As the artist, I may create prints, cards or another painting OR I may license the rights to someone else to make items using the image: rubber stamps, posters, car wraps, whatever.  The recipient of the original has no rights outside of the ownership of the tangible, physical property (painting) and may not dictate what the artist may or may not do with the image.  Even if it's a painting of YOUR cat.  Even if it was painted from your photo.

Another intellectual property tidbit: you need to enforce your intellectual property rights or you lose them.  That's why the Disney Corporation protects Mickey so vehemently.  It's also why I do not ever make exceptions - not even for friends.  I mean, you all saw The Godfather, right?  "It's not personal, Sonny. It's strictly business."

Anyway, I hope this helped to give you a very brief overview of intellectual property as it pertains to questions I get asked pretty often.   If you have more questions, let me know!

Two Finished Pieces and One in the Works

Here is a picture of the painting I created in almost record time (less than a week) for Allyson Seconds' birthday this -OK, technically last- year.

Allyson is a singer/musician and loves bats, hearts and milagros.  She is also my personal trainer, but aside from the heart itself, that imagery will be saved for another painting.

"A Girl and her Cat" is a piece I seem to have been working on FOREVER.  It gave me quite a bit of trouble since I kept going after I should have stopped.  I ended up sanding the background down and building it back up again.  What a nightmare.
A Girl and Her Cat
Anyway, my skele-likeness and Skelekitty are now on their way to Atlanta, GA and the "Not You" self-portrait show at the MINT Gallery curated by my pal and fellow artist, Travis "Mr. Purty" Smith.

Finally, as many of us mourn the loss of David Tennant as "The Doctor," I offer you a little piece of cuteness in progress from the 2008 season to help cheer you up.
Adipose!
I've decided to sell this painting of an ADORABLE little fat cell on Artfire when he's all finished, and I fear that there may be something of a scramble when he finally gets listed.

Is It Competition or A Future "Intern?"

You may recall some posts Skelekitty and I wrote earlier this year about my neighbors' daughter, Santana, who hand-sculpted me a pink haired kitty and dressed as Skelekitty for Halloween this past year.  She's a cool kid for sure, who loves animals and is a bit of a bookworm (sound familiar?).

She has done it again and, of course, I had to blog about it.  Santana and her brother Grant just came by to give me this little treasure (mostly Grant played with Abby and laughed when Santana and I rolled our collective eyes seeing he wasn't wearing shoes)!

Skelekitty Santa by Santana P.

The mini-tote was hand-decorated with a great deal of glittery goodness (and a kitty, of course). The Skelekitty figurine was hand-sculpted AND hand-painted by Santana herself and, if I do say so, I'm not entirely sure I could have done any better myself!

I wonder how her Mom would feel about her daughter going into indentured servitude ... *cough* err, I mean "an internship" making Skelekitty figurines? LOL.

Putting It Out There

Oscar Bird threadpainted art quilt - private collectionThis thread-painted art quilt of my Oscar, the Military Macaw, was the very first piece I ever put in a group "art" (i.e., non-quilt show) show - the January 2006 "National Bird Day" art show in Sacramento, CA.

LoteriaSince that first night, I gradually increased the number of works in group art shows.  First I showed just with The Scary-Art Collective at Body Tribe where I nervously listened to criticism (positive and negative, but all constructive).

Welcome Home Skelekitty quiltBy early 2007, I had started showing at other Sacramento galleries like Side Show Studios and the former 24th Street hot spot, Cool Cat (R.I.P.).

Something Fishy (SOLD) I tried some new techniques and played with new mediums while I continued to find my voice.

painting the roses red

In the last half of 2009, I finally submitted some pieces to out of town (actually, out of State) shows to a positive response.

Now, with four full years of group show experience (not to mention the long list of commissions I just completed), I feel confident enough to consider a solo show.  So I'm putting it "out there" that I'm ready to put it out there - you know, putting it in writing as a promise to myself and so y'all can keep me accountable.

Grinding To A Hault (final)I've already started working on a "theme" involving hearts and skulls with various things growing from them, and we'll see where this leads me.
So far I'm planning on doing most, if not all the pieces using my pyrography and acrylics on wood techniques.

While I'm working on the pieces, I will also be looking around for a gallery to host this currently imaginary solo exhibition.  Oh, the joy of cold calls, how I look forward to it!   I have a short list of places I'd LOVE to show, a medium sized list of places I'd seriously consider (both of which I'm keeping secret to avoid jinxing myself) and a blank list of places I haven't even thought of yet.

If you have a gallery and would like to talk to me about the possibility of doing a solo show, please contact me with your list of demands.

Wish me luck and inspiration and I'll send some right back to you (I'll send you some anyway).

You Have Been Warned

In all seriousness, I'm "feeling" this sign lately since I've been suffering from self-imposed exile in my studio while I work furiously to finish some commissions I took for the holidays. I reiterate that the exile (and subsequent absence of a real blog post) is self-imposed as I try to bring in as much cash as possible to build up the "Skelekitty Tee Shirt Startup Fund" we're working on over here. Yes, I know you all want a tee shirt! I'm painting as fast as I can (now go buy some prints while they're on sale 2fer one).

In other news, Abby has fallen prey to some mysterious toe malady and is going under the knife tomorrow morning. Hopefully, it's just something jammed in there next to her little doggie toenail which hasn't responded to antibiotics and hot epsom salt soaks. If not... well, I understand that even Jack Russells can live full and speedy lives with three toes on one of their front feet. Meanwhile, she's in good spirits and the funkiness that has afflicted said toe is in a place where it hasn't impeded her running any (dog park patrons beware).   I'll keep you all updated as we discover more.

Skelekitty on Crafty Chica's Inspiration Friday!

Guess WHO was featured on Kathy "Crafty Chica" Cano-Murillo's blog today?? She even "outed" me (for my unnatural relationship with glitter).

Diary of a Crafty Chica: INSPIRATION FRIDAY: Skelekitty!

I've noticed a new kitty on the crafting scene - and she literally is...a kitty! This friendly feline has her own web site, a blog and gobs of personality. I was recently able to grab hold of her and ask her a few questions before she sprang out of my hands to go back to her owner's art room. Can you say finicky? By the way, her owner is the talented Krissi Sandvik.

CraftyChica.com: Tell me how you came to be, Miss Skelekitty? Did you get shortchanged from your nine lives?

Skelekitty: Heck no, my nine lives are just beginning! I was introduced to the world in the summer of 2006 when Krissi donated the very first Skelekitty piece a local kitty rescue's annual fundraising auction. Krissi has always loved animals and became fascinated with the Day of the Dead celebration when she lived in San Francisco's Mission District. She thought the spirit of Dia de los Muertos (that is, celebrating the lives of loved ones) fit in perfectly with a kitty adoption organization. Pretty soon, people started asking to see me in more art, so Krissi created a whole line featuring me and my skelecritter pals called Skelekitty and Friends.

Q: And now you are a rockstar kitty - you have a line of stamps in your likeness! Tell me, how did you decide on the poses for the stamps? Did you get final say?

A: Well of COURSE I have final approval on all of my images - I'm a kitty who's definitely not shy about speaking her mind! The stamps were chosen by the nice lady who runs Stampa Fe art stamps in Santa Fe, New Mexico - she picked her four favorites to start off with. The response to the stamps has been so positive, you may be seeing some brand new Skelekitty stamps (and maybe some other skelecritters) soon.

Q: Tell me about your owner, I hear she is very crafty!

A: She sure is - she's always gluing something to something else and started Sacramento's coolest FREE craft night, Scary CRAFT's Night of the Creators. Even her MAIL is crafty! Here is a tutorial!

In addition to her paintings, she makes quilts, reconstructed clothing, shrines, jewelry. Krissi has always loved language and writing and has started to play with photography too! She especially enjoys a challenge where she has create outside of her comfort zone.

Q: How does having a pet helps a person's creativity?

A: Animals are wonderful muses because they are so loving and funny. One of the most popular pieces was inspired by a hungry kitty rubbing against her human's legs when they come home at night.

The antics of Krissi's kitties and dog are often the inspiration for paintings. Anyone who has ever lived with a cat or dog (or small children) will be able to relate to "The Two Sides of Skelekitty."
Q: Will you share your favorite pieces by your owner and how she made them - I'm sure you sat and watched every moment of their creation, right?

A: I imagine everyone expects the portraits of me are my favorites, but they'd be wrong! Like Krissi, my favorite pieces tend to be ones where she experimented by using her favorite imagery within a not-typically-Krissi themes. Painting The Roses Red, which was created for an Alice in Wonderland themed show, is a good example.

I also like the pieces she makes with a real sense of irony, like her "Diet Shrine" art quilt.
Krissi Sandvik. I must share that she told me she never was a fan of glitter until she went on the Crafty Chica cruise and became converted. I think this picture proves that! Krissi is a mixed media artist based out of Sacramento, CA. Visit her blog to see more of her work at http://www.krissisandvik.blogspot.com/

Would you like to submit an article for Inspiration Friday? Click HERE for the guidelines. -SUBMIT your piece with INSPIRATION FRIDAY in the subject line and email to kathy[at]craftychica[dot]com

Peace, love, and glitter!

Skelekitty's First Fan Art

As a lot of you know, I've been working in a loosely interpreted jolly roger theme of late.  Somewhere in a facebook conversation, I asked folks what theme they'd like to see show up next.  Well a long-time friend, Denise, who is a fan of both LOST and Skelekitty, suggested mixing together images from the show and of that crazy cat, and before I could even put together a sketch, I found this in my e-mail In Box!

Hmmmm....  I wonder what kind of goings-on would happen at The Dharma Initiative's "Skelekitty Station."  What do you think they might study there?

This first piece of Skelekitty fan art DEFINITELY earns Denise a Skelekitty Stamp of Approval for her blog.

Now I'm just waiting for that first Skelekitty fan tattoo!

A Busy Week For The Skelecritters (with GIVEAWAY!)

Logan the Pirate Dog - FINAL!If you've been keeping up with Skelekitty over on her blog then this news is probably old hat for you, but I finished another painting this week.  Still working in the "jolly roger" theme, I worked up a custom painting / gift for my friend, Hezekiah, of his Weimaraner, Logan.  Hez likes him some pirates and seriously LOVES his dog, so this seemed like an obvious combination.

After much skele-nagging, I also finally "helped" Skelekitty put together her Etsy shop called "Skelekitty and Friends." While I will continue to carry Skele-prints in my own Etsy shop (krissi.etsy.com ), Skelekitty and Friends will be your official and ultimate one-stop shop for all things skelecritter.

The most popular skelecritter prints (a mere $16 each) have been posted, as well as a few which are available with hand embellishments ($25 each). Shipping is only $5, even if you order 6 prints, and be sure to ask about a discount on multiple print/card purchases, too.

CONTEST ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!

I'm photographing and posting more original art AND am busy working on two new paintings already (taking advantage of how fast-drying acrylic paints are in this weather). In the meantime, head over to Etsy (where it's free to register and shop) and add Skelekitty's new shop to your favorites and you will be entered into a drawing to win a hand embellished (by me, duh) print of the Angel Kitty from Love Cats:

The print sells on Skelekitty's site for $25 each.  It will be custom embellished for the winner using metal leafing in gold, high quality art glitters, crystals (if you'd like kitty to have a sparkly collar) and, of course, love.

The winner will be chosen next Friday, July 24th from those who publicly "" Skelekitty's shop (yeah, that means you 'secret admirers' who keep your favorites under wraps won't be entered, so ya gotta 'fess up!).

So stay cool this weekend and head over to Etsy for a chance to win one of these limited-edition embellished prints.

3 New Pieces (One Is Still Available)

Poison, featuring Skelekitty, is the second in my Jolly Roger series (the first of which is detailed below).

It is an 8x10" acrylic on wood and is priced to sell at only $50 (plus CA sales tax - if applicable, and $7 shipping / insurance). I've already had several inquiries, but as of this posting, it's available.

A little low on scratch? Worry not. Open edition prints are also available for an even better price of $16 each (and if you purchase more than one, shipping on the rest -up to 5- is FREE!)

The first painting in the series was the result of me playing around with an idea to do a skull & "crossbones," but with chiles instead. I thought it was a pretty silly idea, but figured it would keep me out of trouble for a day or two, and at least I'd be amused (even if no-one else was). However, the Jolly Jalepeno as my Aunt Merry calls it, found a new home in Texas with my pal Jill of Swag Arts before it was even half way finished! This once again proves that I am no judge of what will work and what won't - y'all remember that Skelekitty started off as my idea of a one-hit-tongue-in-cheek donation, right?

A few folks have already asked for prints so, yeah, they're available too (same price & shipping deal I mentioned above).

I started working on 8x10" plaques with the art trade I did with my friend Kit Cameo. She asked for a skull with her two kitties, and the result was Kitties For Kit. While creating this piece, I realized how fun it was to work on a relatively small canvas (I had been working on 12x24" pieces of wood). Another plus of the small size is that these works are affordable for YOU!

Kitties For Kit will not be available as a print (sorry folks - funny shape = no prints).

So today, I scored myself four new plaques - all in an ever so slightly larger 9x12" size and I'll be putting my brain to work coming up with some ideas ..... NOW.

Dang.

I got nuthin'.

Well, off to bed to dream up some more "silly" ideas.

Givin' It Away (Again)

There is a local and very worthy cause to which Skelekitty and I like to donate each year called "Painting For Paws," which benefits Happy Tails Pet Sanctuary here in Sacramento.

Painting For Paws 2009 Flyer
(clicky click to embiggen the poster)

Did you know that Skelekitty's very first appearance in this world was at the Painting For Paws event in 2007? It's true - I thought it would be fun to create a feisty Dia de los Muertos kitty with a sense of humor for this event, and since that fateful night, she has taken over my life!
Skelekitty & Skelemouse (SK's debut!)
"Skelekitty & Skelemouse" (SK's debut in 2007!)

This year, the Happy Tails cats and dogs are once again busy with their creative endeavors, painting one-of-a-kind pieces of original artwork for event (accompanied by a photo and bio of the furry artist). In addition, there will be complimentary food & wine, a silent auction, a prize drawing and animal-themed jewelry for sale. No admission fee!,

I am donating three hand-embellished prints of various kitties for the silent art auction:
A pair of my newest Skelekitty prints, Angel / Devil, will be auctioned off together as a set.

This one isn't Skelekitty, strictly speaking, but she's the cutest little angel kitten!

Each of my 8x10" prints is hand-embellished with art glitter (& perhaps some other goodies) and enclosed in an an acid-free clear bag with sturdy backing and information such as the title, artist, Painting for Paws fundraiser, etc.

I hope you'll all mark your calendars and come out for this wonderful event (and who knows, you may go home with a hand-embellished skele-print at a real bargain!)
