Spring Forward In Time - Timey Wimey Piece and Print of the Week

It's Monday, and that means it's time for a new Print of the Week (and it's early since I'm not catching up on last night's episode of a show my husband won't watch).  But first...

Timey Wimey Weeping Angel
pendant
with watch gears
I was going through my supply stash recently and came across some Nunn Design 1" bezels I purchased at an expo a few years back.  I was doing a run of glass and resin pendants anyway, so I thought it would be a perfect time to do some resin layering in one of the bezels.

But which image should I use and what stuff should I layer in there?

We learned in the Doctor Who episode Blink that the Weeping Angels use time to "kill you nicely. No mess, no fuss. They just zap you into the past and let you live to death."  Then they feed off all of your life's stolen moments.  So yeah, it seemed obvious: one of my Weeping Angel paintings + timey wimey stuff (gears) = awesome.  I made one of these to see how you guys like them, but if I make more, each would be slightly different (and yes, of course you can get one custom made with a different Weeping Angel).

Sage Bee 8x10" print
Moving on to something a bit lighter (but wait!  We "lost" an hour recently!  Was it the Weeping Angels or daylight saving time?)  It's definitely feeling like here, which means sunshine, sneezing, blossoms and bees!  I'm celebrating the return of the honeybees by putting the Sage Bee print up as Print of the Week.  Sage Bee was one of the paintings I did for the Spring "Out There" nature-themed art show last April.

You know the deal by now: the 8x10's are 50% off (only $7.25), you don't need a coupon code, and the sale is good all week (I switch them out mid-day on Mondays).  You can always find the Print of the Week by clicking the link in my shop, or find all the sale items by clicking on OMG, ON SALE!!! (and I added some more pendants to the sale/clearance section last week!).

Oh yeah, and I'm working on something else to help you navigate the shop, but that will have to wait for another blog post.

Happy *ACHOO!* springtime!

Prints of the Week: Butterflies On The Brain

Maybe I was inspired to make these prints the "Prints of the Week" because we saw a Monarch butterfly while walking the dog this weekend.  Maybe it's because The Venture Bros. is finally coming back with Season 5.  Honestly, who's to say?  Either way, you can have 8x10s of either Soul Searching or Spirits' Journey for half off this week (a limited number of 11x14s are also available and also on sale).

Soul Searching (top) and Spirits' Journey (bottom)
Here's the scoop on my weekly print sale:
  • Sale is from Monday to following Monday, I usually switch them up around lunchtime (or some time that afternoon)
  • You don't need a coupon code, Prints of the Week are automatically marked down
  • 50% off 8x10" prints (only $7.25!) and more than 30% off 11x14" prints
  • No limit - get as many as you like
  • I'll decide which prints go up, BUT I will make that decision based on fan/client input
  • Images will not be POTW more than once in a 6 month period, so snap up your favorite when it comes around
  • You can find the POTW by clicking on the Print of the Week link from my site (or click the OMG, on sale! link to see everything that's been marked down).
  • Occasionally, like this week, I'll put a pair of prints on sale.  When I do, you can get just one or both if you like.

Check back next Monday (just click on the "Print of the Week" link in my shop) to see which print will be on sale.  I will switch them up around lunchtime here in California.

And of course, let me know which image you would like to see as Print Of The Week!

California Golden Poppies - Print of the Week

It's time for the new Print of the Week (POTW) where I choose an image and put the print on sale big time.

This week's POTW is the Golden Poppies from my Art Nouveau/Arts & Crafts Flowers series.  The 8x10s" are marked down 50%, from $14.49 to only $7.25.  The 11x14" sizes are available for $14.25 (regularly $21.49).
Bright orange "Golden Poppies" pop off of a turquoise background layered with dragonflies and gears. This piece is the first in a series of four paintings inspired by the Art Nouveau / Arts & Crafts movement at the turn of the 20th Century and intertwines organic elements with images of industrialization.

For those of you new to POTW, I got the idea from the indie makeup companies that offer a different one of their colors at a discounted price each week or month (Color of the Week/Month).  The idea is that every week, a different one of my prints will be massively on sale.  Here's how I see it working out:
  • Sale is from Monday at lunchtime to following Monday at lunchtime
  • No coupon needed, it's marked down already
  • 50% off 8x10" prints and more than 30% off 11x14" prints
  • No limit - get as many as you like
  • I'll decide which prints go up, BUT I will make that decision based on fan/client input
  • Images will not be POTW more than once in a 6 month period, so snap up your favorite when it comes around
  • You can find the POTW by clicking on the Print of the Week link from my site (or click the SALE link to see everything that's been marked down).
  • Occasionally, I'll put a pair of prints on sale (because I'm nuts)

Check back next Monday (just click on the "Print of the Week" link in my shop) to see which print will be on sale.  I will switch them up around lunchtime here in California.

And of course, let me know which image you would like to see as Print Of The Week!

Release - Print of the Week 50% off

It's time for the new Print of the Week (POTW) where I choose an image and put the print on sale big time.

This week's POTW is the bird & cage detail from my painting Release.  The 8x10s" are marked down 50%, from $14.49 to only $7.25.  The 11x14" sizes are available for $14.25 (regularly $21.49).

"Release" was created for the January 2009 National
Bird Day Celebration  - a day to bring awareness
to wild and captive birds across the world.
(The full painting shows the two wild birds releasing a
large heart with parrot wings from a gilded cage.)
For those of you new to POTW, I got the idea from the indie makeup companies that offer a different one of their colors at a discounted price each week or month (Color of the Week/Month).  The idea is that every week, a different one of my prints will be massively on sale.  Here's how I see it working out:

Shipping and Order Status Information

"I'm too pretty to work." ~Skelekitty
Hi everyone!  Things are much busier than usual here in my studio, but as usual, Skelekitty is being a lazy bum, moving from sun spot to sun spot without lifting one bony paw to help!  Darned cat.  I've been so overwhelmed with orders for the Help Hank fund that I'm running a little more behind than usual. Mind you, I am NOT complaining!  My heart is absolutely full to bursting with how people have come together for that dog.

So.  Updates.  I haz dem:

SHIPPING PROCEDURE:

When I print your mailing label, you will receive a notification e-mail from USPS tracking, however, there is usually some lag time between when I print the label to pack your order and when the package is picked up by my super-awesome mail carrier. When the package actually goes out the door, you will receive an e-mail from ArtFire* saying that your package shipped, and one with your shipping confirmation number again. Oh, and shipping on original art and pendants ALWAYS includes insurance, so if you have any difficulty with your package, we've got it covered.
* if your order ships in separate packages, you will received the ArtFire "shipped" confirmation only after all items have shipped.

ORDER UPDATES:

Prints:  All prints in orders placed before December first have been packed & shipped, and USPS Track & Confirm notices have been sent.  These shipments include orders for prints placed with jewelry or original art (prints and jewelry/small art ordered together always ship separately because of the different shapes and sizes).  Print orders placed after 12/1 will ship later this week - probably Thursday, maybe earlier if I stay focused!

Jewelry:  Turnaround time for jewelry orders is usually 7-14 days.  Yep, it takes that long for me to make them since they involve lots of little steps with 12-hour drying times in between.  With the increased number of orders (and my aforementioned alter ego being a bum), I'm estimating a minimum of 14 days for jewelry now, just to be on the safe side.  Anyway, since the prints are out the door, I am spending today working on finishing up earring and pendant orders and making some extras for the show Allyson and I are doing on the 10th in Sacramento.

My sincere apologies for the extra wait time.  All orders already placed WILL be to you well before Christmas!  I promise.  And if anyone has some extra elves they want to send my way, I wouldn't refuse 'em!

Do you have a question that wasn't answered in this post?  The fastest way to get a response is to e-mail krissisandvik@gmail.com.  Facebook posts/tags/PMs, ArtFire messages and other contact methods are hit and miss at best.

Thank you again for the awesome response to the Help Hank fund!  I do still have some in-stock and ready to ship pendants, so if you're in a hurry for a gift, check 'em out.  More will be added on December 11th.

FAQ: Can I Use That Image? (aka Copyright 101)

Intellectual property (patents, licenses, copyrights) is a pretty tough concept to get your mind around, but you are in luck.  As it happens, before I was a full time artist, I used to negotiate licensing agreements.  True story.  And since I received two almost identical inquiries involving this very subject in the last few months, I figured it warranted its own post.

In both cases, the requests boiled down to this:

they wanted to commission a piece of art from me and then sell reproductions of the image (one on jewelry, one as prints).

My short answer was "no" to both because, whether or not they purchase a physical painting from me, the image still belongs to me.  That's where the "intellectual" part of intellectual property comes in - the idea (and execution of that idea) is my property.  Yep.  No matter what they pay for the paintings themselves, such payment does not include the right to use the images.

Still a little confused?  No problem.

Think of it this way:  Let's say you go to Borders or your local book store (they still have those, right?) and you buy a copy of Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows.  You own that physical book, that thing with pages (the "tangible property") - you paid for it.  You may put it on the shelf or dog-ear the corners, sell it in a garage sale or even, God forbid, burn it if you want to.  However, you don't own the rights to the IDEAS contained therein.  You may not make copies of the book and sell them.  You may not make a movie of the book.... unless of course you have permission from Ms. Rowling (customarily in the form of a license agreement and huge-ass amounts of cash going from you to her).

Art works very much in the same way.  Let's say you pay me for a custom painting of your cat.  No matter how much I charge you for that painting - you are only paying for my time, supplies and creativity, not for the rights to use the image.  So even if I charge you an exorbitant amount, you still may not make copies, prints, Christmas cards (not even for your own use) unless we have a written agreement where I specifically give you those rights (which would be under a License Agreement).  Yeah, I know, even though it's YOUR cat.  Even if I painted from a photo you took.

2011 ADDENDUM:  The reverse/reciprocal is also true: I have the right to do whatever I want with the image.  As the artist, I may create prints, cards or another painting OR I may license the rights to someone else to make items using the image: rubber stamps, posters, car wraps, whatever.  The recipient of the original has no rights outside of the ownership of the tangible, physical property (painting) and may not dictate what the artist may or may not do with the image.  Even if it's a painting of YOUR cat.  Even if it was painted from your photo.

Another intellectual property tidbit: you need to enforce your intellectual property rights or you lose them.  That's why the Disney Corporation protects Mickey so vehemently.  It's also why I do not ever make exceptions - not even for friends.  I mean, you all saw The Godfather, right?  "It's not personal, Sonny. It's strictly business."

Anyway, I hope this helped to give you a very brief overview of intellectual property as it pertains to questions I get asked pretty often.   If you have more questions, let me know!

FAQs Answered: How do you make your prints?

I get this question all the time (*cough* 50% of the time it's from people who don't want to do their own research *cough*).   I photograph, crop, color correct, digitally manipulate (if necessary to reposition aspects to fit in 8x10 aspect ratio) and print all of my pieces myself.
  • Camera: I have a Nikon D40X camera and use a tripod and a Tamron 18-270 lens with vibration control.
  • Software/hardware: I use a variety of software including Corel PaintShop Pro, Adobe Photoshop Elements and Gimp.  Sometimes I edit with a mouse and sometimes I use my Wacom Bamboo graphics tablet and pen.
  • Printer/inks: I use an Epson Stylus Photo printer with fade resistant pigment inks, professional photo paper and package using archival quality bags and backings (available at clearbags.com)
And sure, there are other easier and more cost effective ways to make prints, but my hand-made process allows me to keep an eye on the quality and to offer prints of each and every painting requested, not just the most popular ones.
