Excuses, Tutorials and A BIG-ASS GROUP SALE!

Have you been wondering where I was?  Yeah.  Me too.  First, I survived "The Plague" (OK, it was really just strep & sinusitis) which seems to be going around with a vengeance this Autumn.

Second, I've been blogging every week over at Modern Rosies (and I have another really REALLY awesome Ask Krissi's Art Studio tutorial publishing tomorrow!).

Third, and this is the biggie, the GB Handmade team of creative types has been busy behind the scenes cooking up a GREAT pre-holiday sale for all of you!  We're calling this our Skull Appreciation Sale 'cause it's that skully time of year and, let's face it, you'd look funny without your skull (not to mention several other non-cosmetic issues you'd have).

We Haz Art! We Can Haz Show?

Friends!!!

Many of you have heard about our friend Kim's battle with cancer and the "Teal Ribbon Fund" set up by my guild/team, Glitter-Bitches Handmade, but some of you have not. For those who haven't...

We established the "Teal Ribbon Fund" (TRF) to help our friend and fellow member Kim Mayhew of Ant Farm Studio (http://antfarmstudio.artfire.com), a full-time working artist. Kim recently underwent surgery for uterine cancer, sans insurance coverage.  She is recovering very well however, the bills continue to roll in. Her doctors have told her that she will not need chemo or radiation treatment, but the battle is far from over. Because Kim has given so much to the art community, we decided to make a few pieces and sell them in our shop to help her out where we can.

The outpouring of help from the handmade/arts community has been amazing - we have received donations of cash and handmade goods for sale from many people - most of whom have never even met Kim. To date, we have raised several hundred dollars toward Kim's $10-$15,000 medical bills, and we have no intention of stopping.

Slow and steady kicks cancer's ass, as they say.

Now I'm approaching gallery owners/curators for help. WE NEED VENUES AND CURATORS!!!! There is a huge community of underground/alternative artists who have art set aside to donate, but we have nowhere to hang this imaginary show and no-one to coordinate the efforts. If you are a gallery owner or curator who might be able to help, please contact me at krissi@glitter-bitches.com with:
  • Gallery name & location
  • Curator contact information
  • Available dates / length of run
  • Gallery percentage
  • Art requirements (size/shape limitations, hanging requirements, etc.)
If you are an artist, I urge you to forward this information to your gallery contacts and help us obtain a show. Unfortunately, the time requirements of the TRF take up the time our team members would need to research and develop new relationships with galleries. We're looking to YOU to help us do that.

I know there is at least one venue out there. Maybe more. And I know you are the people to reach out to.

Thanks in advance for your help and, even if you can't help, for all the healing thoughts you send Kim's way (those help more than you could ever know).

Something New - Weekly Quick Bitch Picks

Today, I decided I would make a weekly habit of stalking the shops of my fellow Glitter Bitches Handmade members to see what I'm missing when I rely on the ol' Facebook feeds.  Yep, I realized there was a LOT of stuff I hadn't seen and some things that I'd forgotten about, so I decided to pick three items every week and tell my peeps about them.  Since there are only eight members of our team, I'll also include items from our team shop, from shops of current and previous Guest Artisans and from our Affiliate Members.  This is stuff you will want to know about, trust me.

Without any further introduction, here is the first of what I hope will be MANY Krissi's Weekly Quick Bitch Picks:

GLITTER BITCHES MEMBER, Kim Mayhew's "Loco Folko" Dragon
http://antfarmstudio.artfire.com
GLITTER BITCHES MEMBER, Wenchkin's Dork Dog Magnet
http://wenchcraft.artfire.com
GLITTER BITCHES MEMBER, ArJay's Fuchsia Skullerfly hair clip

(coming soon to ArtFire!)

Where the HELL Have You Been? Do You Know What Time It Is!?

I know I haven't been over here blogging all that much lately, but I don't want you to think it's because I don't love you all.  Amidst and amongst the usual excuses of the colder, darker, wetter winter season, I have been working on some fun stuff.

Glitter Bitches Handmade logo
(art by Wenchkin)
Life of a Glitter Bitch - My team, Glitter Bitches Handmade has been crazy busy over the past year since we first formed.  Initially, we figured we'd simply cross promote across our fan bases and give a few things away as a group.  After we added four new members at the end of last year, the group started to morph into a full fledged "guild." We expanded our presence on Facebook and opened an ArtFire shop to cover our growing administrative expenses like mailing prizes, business cards and promotional items.

Around the time we were setting up our shop, our good friend and fellow Glitter Bitch Kim Mayhew of Ant Farm Studio** was diagnosed with an aggressive form of uterine cancer - and there she was, with no insurance.  Well if you don't already know this, you can knock a Bitch down, but she'll get right back up again.  Fighting.  Hard.  So we started adding items to the shop to raise money to help Kim out.  The Teal Ribbon Fund, as it came to be known, has been a runaway success, thanks in large part to Kim's friends and the DIY community who turned out in force.  We even list items donated by some well-known non-Bitch artists & crafters as weekly featured Guest Artisans - Honorary Bitches, if you will.
**you can find Kim online at Got-Ants.com, on Facebook or in her ArtFire shop!

Hmmm.... Let's see, what else?  Oh, one of our members, ArJay of Kiss Zombies, has started up an inspiration contest series to help spark creativity in our collective fan base.  The current round ends on April 7th - Fabulous Prizes are a definite possibility if you enter....

Glitter Bitches Handmade Inspiration Contest
"Bitch Favorite" Prize
2" Pendant of Old Growth (detail)
(ends Thursday, April 7th
check here for details on how to enter)
Random prize:Loco Folko Vampire PEZ dispenser
by Kim Mayhew of Ant Farm Studio

Anyone may enter, as long as they follow the rules ArJay has set forth here:  INSPIRATION CONTEST GUIDELINES AND RULES.  The "Bitch Favorite" entry will win my twinchie pendant (doesn't Brooke look cute modeling her twinchie Glitter Bitches pendant?), and a random winner will receive one of Kim's awesome "Loco Folko" PEZ dispensers - I have a few of them myself and love them.

Art Stuff - I have been working on a few new pieces, but they are mostly in the sketch phase or are "secret" and not available for public consumption.  Yet.  Sorry, but that's just part of the deal I struck.  I've been keeping up on my prints and pendants (which were featured in December on Rings & Things' blog), with earrings in the works.  The prints and jewelry have become a very popular (and affordable!) way for people to collect my art.

Oh! And my new business cards came in yesterday!  Next week's shipments will have them.

I've been replacing the headers in my sites with the newer, more Krissified image.  This blog is next.

Makeup - It was a weird winter and several indie makeup companies have been outed for a lot of bad/unsafe/unethical practices, which makes me sad for the good companies out there.  However, I have tried to focus on the fun part of makeup, rather than turning into a Mean Makeup Girl.

For those of you who want to see what I do when I'm painting my face, you can follow it on my relatively new Facebook page: Krissi's Makeup Studio.  I will remind you that I am not a makeup artist; I am an artist who likes makeup.  However, there is some cool (to me anyway) stuff over there like my series of tutorials on the color wheel called Beginning Color Theory for Non-Artists (so cool, in fact, that I am in the process of copying them all over to this blog too).

Life - I continue to spend just about every day enjoying the life as a Jack Russell Terrier's human.  Abby keeps me sane and happy.  I am THRILLED that the clear weather is finally upon us so that we can take more breaks during the day and get outside to take pictures and dig for voles (I do the former, she the latter).
Me in my 2007 Z4M Coupe at Thunderhill

Finally, I have started tracking my car.  For those of you who don't know what that means, it means that I take my car to the racetrack (yes, a real one, not an oval) and run it around.  Fast.  As I write this entry, I am preparing for my second track day on Friday, April 1st at Thunderhill Raceway here in Central California.  It would appear that the Skelekitty has a need for speed....

Enjoy the Spring and I'll really TRY to check in over here more often.  In the meantime, you voyeurs can spy on me over on Facebook.

The Sales Are Coming, Hooray, Hooray!

I have two new announcements about my shop, Krissi's Art Studio (home of Skelekitty and Friends) and one about the super-awesome fantastic group I work with, so let's get right to it, I know you all have pies to make and last-minute groceries to pick up!

GIFT CERTIFICATES ARE HERE!

Starting this week and continuing until... well, whenever, Krissi's Art Studio will offer gift certificates for the most popular items in the shop (prints, wearable items), in standard dollar amounts ($10, $25, $40, $50, etc.) or in any amount you would like to give.  To view the certificates just go to my shop and click on the section marked GIFT CERTIFICATES.  For custom amounts, all you need to do is drop me an e-mail and we'll work it out.

When you purchase a gift certificate, you will receive a receipt with the certificate number.  I will also provide you with a printed and signed certificate to present as a gift.  If you would prefer to have the certificate shipped directly to the third party, it's no problem, just specify the person's name and mailing address in the NOTES TO SELLER section when you purchase (please do not add the recipient as purchaser).

The rest of the details will be available in the listings, so keep your eyes peeled!

BLACK FRIDAY - CYBER MONDAY SALE!

I couldn't decide on what deals to offer over the big shopping weekend, so I figured I'd just cut prices on everything!  Starting on Thanksgiving Day (yep, a day early, 'cause you might need an excuse to escape from the family to shop) I'll be offering coupons for deals in my shop.  EVERYTHING in my shop, including original art AND EVEN GIFT CERTIFICATES!  Dude, that means you can buy more gift for less money AND let them pick which one they want!  Here are the important codes:

Save 10% on purchases over $10 by entering coupon code SAVE10OVER10 when you check out.
Save 15% on purchases of $25 or more with coupon code SAVE15OVER25
Save 20% on $40 or more with coupon code SAVE20OVER40
Save 25% on $75 or more with coupon code SAVE25OVER75
Save 30% on $100 or more with coupon code SAVE30OVER100

The fine print:  Purchase amounts eligible for discounts are for product only and do not include shipping.  Coupon MUST be redeemed at the time of purchase - discounts will not be given after the fact.  Customer is responsible for entering the correct coupon code.  Codes are not limited to one-use-per-customer, but discounts are not cumulative on separate purchases.  I am a single-woman operation and a working artist - please don't tell me how cheap you can get stuff at WalMart - that's just insulting.  Thank you for buying handmade for the holidays!

GLITTER BITCHES HANDMADE!

All the working artisans known as the "Glitter Bitches" are offering various Mega-Shopping-Weekend sales, so be sure to drop by our blog to find out the details!
